Frequently Asked Questions

Q.

Is it important that a painting company have insurance?

A.

All licenced painter contractors in the state of California are required to carry a bond, but they are not required to have insurance. If your contractor is not bonded, he or she does not have a licence. Be aware that the importance of being insured as a contractor is primarily to protect the homeowner moreso than the business owner – So it is imperative that your contractor provide this proof. All contractors should at least have liability insurance and additional items such as Worker’s Compensation, depending on the specific job. At DJS Painting, we are bonded and have liability insurance for every individual job, and have additional insurance measures according to each job.

Q.

Is DJS Painting a member of the Better Business Bureau (BBB)?

A.

While interviewing contractors, ask them if they are members of the Better Business Bureau, and if they have been a member in good standing for several years. All BBB Accredited Businesses have agreed to uphold BBB standards for ethics in the industry; if they are not members of the BBB, ask if they are members of a known professional association with a code of ethics. If they are a member of the BBB or another association, you can check with the agency in order to find out how long the contractor has been in business, and if they have any complaints filed against them. Not only is DJS Painting a member of the San Jose BBB, but when the Bureau wanted to repaint their interior and exterior, they chose to use our company. We think that gives our Member in Good Standing certification an upgrade to “Great Standing”.

Q.

How many years of painting experience does DJS Painting have?

A.

All of our employees have at least nine years experience, and many are experts in specific areas of painting; we take this into account when hiring teams for each job, because we want our employees to be more than comfortable with the work they are doing. In researching contractors for your job, you also want to ensure that their experience is specific to the job for which you are hiring them; for instance, do you need the exterior of your home painted? Will they need to use a paint sprayer, or will they be doing detailed trim work? Your contractors should be qualified for the type of work they are doing, and should be able to show you photographed examples of previous work. In looking for a painter, we recommend a minimum of five years experience in the industry per person hired for a project.

Q.

Do you install wall paper too?

A.

Rather than installing wall paper, we generally encourage our clients to use paint to achieve what they are looking for in wall paper. Why? Because the end result is better, decorative paint is less expensive, and it’s significantly easier to change in the future when you decide you no longer want wall paper. Here at DJS Painting, our Decorative Painter, Frank, can do any kind of custom decorative wall painting for your project.

Q.

Do I need a color consultant?

A.

It depends. If you know exactly what you want, or have done extensive research in magazines, online, and in other homes, you may not need a consultant. However, if you really don’t know what you’re looking for, but know you need a change in your home, a color consultant can alleviate your stresses and concerns. Let’s just say this: If you are painting your walls white because you are scared to try anything else, then yes, you need a color consultant!

Q.

What kind of turnaround time can I expect? How quick will the job be?

A.

The timeline for each job depends on the size and scope of the overall project. Once the scope of the work is determined, we calculate an incredibly accurate timeframe – something we are proud to be able to uphold. A project can take anywhere from a half-day for a one-room interior, or up to six weeks if we are doing an exterior, interior and decorative finishes on a house larger than 3000 sq ft.

Q.

Do you provide a guarantee on products and services?

A.

Yes. DJS Painting provides a five year written guarantee on all of our labor and services, and our painting products are guaranteed as well.

Q.

Tell me about your pricing?

A.

DJS Painting offers free estimates. For each estimate, our owner, Donald comes to your home to go over the project in detail and prepare a thorough estimate, which includes totals for labor and materials. This estimate will not change unless additional services are requested, and in those cases a change order must be approved. To note, if you are sourcing estimates from a variety of painters, do not accept an over-the-phone estimate from a painter who has never come to your home to view your property. People commonly make this mistake, and will discover that the initial estimate they were quoted changes drastically as work begins; a painter must see the property to give a quote.

Q.

Do I have to be home while work is being done on my house?

A.

No. We will coordinate directly with you in order to determine the best solution that is most convenient for you. For instance, we can provide a lock box that you will set the code for, so you can be assured that the only people coming in your home while you’re away are from DJS Painting, or you can choose to provide our management team with a key. It is incredibly common for our clients to have interior and exterior painting jobs done while they are at work or on vacation, so we are happy to work with you to ensure your home is secure throughout.

Q.

What things do I need to do before I paint?

A.

Nothing. DJS Painting will literally take care of everything, so your home is ready for paint. We will protect all flooring, walls and ceilings that aren’t being painted, will cover vents that may carry particles (eg: from sanding) to other areas of your house, protect your artwork, furniture, and anything else in the vicinity of your project. And, we clean it all up when we’re done.
